John's Horse Barn

The Horse Barn turned Office resides on the Waseka's property
and is within walking distance to the house.

ohn thought it was an eyesore; Marla thought it was a diamond in the rough.  They both agreed something needed to be done.  The 100 foot long horse barn with an apartment attached is on their property - and the first thing you see when you drive in the yard.

The Turret with a 360 degree view is a perfect hangout for children.

Marla’s office with Old World plaster, exposed brick, wood-paneled ceiling and tongue & groove pine floor.

The exterior needed to be addressed first, the cedar shakes were high maintenance and the woodpeckers had attacked.  Marla and John wanted low-maintenance so they employed cement-board siding; new shingles and new large cottage windows.  A transformation was made.  To keep the essence of the structure, wood plank flooring was installed and distressed; the horse-gnawed posts were left in place and Old World plaster with exposed brick was used on the walls.  The turret up above is light and airy with a built-in bench seat and two desks for after-school homework.  It is the perfect child’s hangout.

Before: Small windows and decomposing cedar shakes define the structure.

Where horses used to rest, a person can now sit in the chair; put up their feet and read a magazine.  The office is customized with stained glass lites in the paneled ceiling; kitchenette cabinetry modeled after a Hoosier cabinet and a quarter-sawn oak printer cabinet; all designed by Marla of Graceful Spaces, LLC.
Cozy & functional, the gas fireplace inhabits one corner of the Office.

A secondary office is placed where a bedroom used to be.

The focus was on energy efficiency so it was super-insulated - efficient in-floor heat and an on-demand water heater was added.  After the first winter in the office, the propane tank was downsized to half its size.

With a ¾ bath, kitchenette and laundry closet, this office can multi-purpose as an efficiency apartment for long-term guests.  If you want to see this office, contact Marla at Graceful Spaces for a visit.
